"CONGRATULATIONS! It is our sincere pleasure to inform you that you are a Finalist in the 18th Annual National Indie Excellence®Awards. Your book embodies the standards of excellence that this award was created to celebrate." Category: NATIVE/INDIGENOUS/FIRST NATIONS FICTION – “Cherokee Reel” James A. Humphrey

This award adds the author to the NIEA Speaker's Bureau as an additional benefit which is a list of nationally recognized and utilized people available for speaking engagements. Incidentally but of interest to our members, today the author was contacted by a reporter from the "Cherokee Phoenix" to arrange a telephone interview for her "in progress" article on his trilogy. Shown in the photo taken in the Cherokee Nation's national treasure vault is Jesse Bushyhead's eleven-year-old son's rifle that the boy carried during the forced removal. Bushyhead led a detachment over the Northern Route.

Several members of our group attended the Nation's Community and Cultural Outreach tour for at-large citizens recently. The group was invited into the vault to view an immense storehouse, climatically controlled for preservation, with strict instructions not to touch the artifacts. This access by the public is a very rare privilege and our members totally enjoyed the unique experience.

The Oklahoma Native American Basketweavers Association, with the help of a grant from Cherokee Gadugi, hosted a basketweaving class taught by Rose Drake and Barbara Hair May 11th at the Zarrow Regional Library in Tulsa. Students chose a basic or a Cherokee rim for their choice of two designs. The photo above was selected from ONABA publicity and the participants are not identified, posted with the permission of the hosting organization.
